While teaching art in slums and red light areas of India I focused on the fundamentals of art including drawing. In the process I worked a lot with charcoal, a medium I initially avoided as I found it challenging to control. Gradually I learned to embrace charcoal, one of the purest, most ancient objects one can make a mark with and I learned to love the unpredictability, the roughness as well as the immediacy.
